has been trained by the Michigan State University Teaching Assistant Program
and tutored for 2-1/2 years using Technology Enhanced Accent Modification
[TEAM] software. This software is used to reduce accents for non-English
speakers. Clients are taught on a one-to-one basis meeting twice a week for eight to nine weeks. A customized lesson plan is developed for each individual according to their need. For example, if the client is having particular difficulty with front vowels, more time and attention is paid to these activities. The lesson is aided by TEAM software, which includes listening, vowel plots, intonation contour graphs, helpful articulation hints, and records the student's performance and compares it to the model. TEAM uses a continuous assessment system so that clients are given fair and informative feedback on their progress on a daily basis. Each client receives a thorough course pack, which contains all covered material and extra exercises. Clients are encouraged to work at home. TEAM has 6 components: • software for retrieval, display and playback of model utterances. • a computer-based Accent Survey that assists in identifying accent features that need modification. • a curriculum addressing the 15 features of speech that make accents most difficult to understand. • an instructional methodology for accent monitoring and modification that can be used on their own or with tutors. • a database of 3600 (1800 male, 1800 female) model utterances, and • a reference manual describing the program and its use. Screen shots show the client's sound in relation to the ideal pronunciation of a particular vowel. Additionally, students can view waveforms and compare their utterances to the model pronunciation. |
